Students Abducted in May by Islamic Militants in Nigeria Are Rescued, Government Says
Security forces said 39 pupils and seven teachers were freed after a multi-agency operation that arrested eight suspects and killed several militants.
On Friday, the government of Nigeria announced the rescue of students abducted in May by Muslim militants in Oyo, southwestern Nigeria.
This successful military operation ended a siege lasting over 50 days; however, one teacher abducted alongside the students was killed shortly afterward.
Government spokesman Bayo Onanuga said eight militants were arrested as part of the operation, with authorities reporting more than 40 students had been abducted initially.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said the operation ended the standoff and brought relief to the entire nation and the affected families.
These abductions in Oyo marked an escalation of Nigeria's security crisis, as similar attacks occurred in Borno during the same week.
About two months ago, more than 40 Nigerian students were in the hands of Islamist terrorists. Now, the military reports the liberation of the children.
The children were abducted in May from three schools in southwestern Nigeria. A teacher was killed in captivity. During the liberation campaign several terrorists were killed and others arrested.
