US and Japan, long alarmed by China’s aggression, agree to establish missile-production facility

The project is meant to expand missile output and strengthen allied stockpiles as Japan and the United States deepen defense industrial cooperation.

  • On Wednesday, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth agreed in the Philippines to establish a final assembly facility in Japan for the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile .
  • The ministers agreed to "implement an effective denial defence in the First Island Chain," a strategy designed to deter aggression by strengthening regional munitions production and defense industrial capacity.
  • This agreement follows a $20.7 billion Pentagon contract with RTX to accelerate AMRAAM production, aiming to increase annual output to at least 1,900 missiles supplying the U.S. and over 40 allied nations.
  • Beyond the missile facility, Hegseth and Koizumi committed to sharing technical data for SM-3 Block IIA interceptor production, while also agreeing to expand cooperation on cyberattacks and joint live-fire drills.
  • Koizumi updated Hegseth on Japan's security strategy review, noting that revisions to the country's three main national security documents are scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
