Deezer Reports 44% of Daily Uploads Are AI-Generated Tracks

- Deezer reports that nearly 44% of daily uploads are AI-generated, with roughly 75,000 tracks added daily. This pace translates to more than two million new songs per month, marking an unprecedented wave of artificial content.
- To address rising fraud concerns, Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the platform is labeling AI content, removing it from recommendation algorithms, and demonetizing suspicious uploads. "We hope the whole music ecosystem will join us in taking action," Lanternier added.
- In a landmark March case, Michael Smith was sentenced for using bots to scam more than $8 million from streaming platforms. While AI tracks account for only 1% to 3% of total streams, 85% of those streams are actually fraudulent.
- Survey data shows that 97% of listeners cannot distinguish between AI and human-made music, yet 80% agreed that streaming platforms should clearly label AI-generated content. Additionally, 73% of listeners want disclosure for algorithmic recommendations.
- The Velvet Sundown, an AI band that went viral last year, saw monthly listeners drop from more than 474,000 to over 127,000, illustrating declining engagement. Deezer is now licensing its detection technology to other platforms to reduce industry-wide streaming fraud.
