Steve Smith Overtakes Australia Legend Steve Waugh In Massive Test Record
Smith moved past Steve Waugh with 10,945 Test runs and now trails only Ricky Ponting and Allan Border on Australia’s all-time list.
Australian batter Steve Smith became the country's third-highest Test run-scorer during Day 1 of the opening Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban, moving to 10,945 career runs.
Achieving the milestone in 224 innings, the batter was 42 innings faster than the 19-year career of former captain Steve Waugh, who scored 10,927 runs in 260 innings across 168 Tests.
Facing a difficult opening day, Australia found relief through batter Matt Renshaw and captain Pat Cummins, unbeaten on 46 and 33 respectively, while South African bowlers Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen made regular breakthroughs.
To move into second place, the veteran requires 229 runs to surpass former captain Allan Border, who currently holds that position on the all-time list with 11,174 runs.
Dismissing batters Alex Carey and Beau Webster, South African bowler Anrich Nortje challenged the visitors as the team faces a difficult task to maintain momentum throughout the ongoing series.
