Stellantis in Talks to Build Chinese EVs at Canadian Plant: Bloomberg
The talks are preliminary and could revive the idled plant as Ottawa seeks new Chinese EV investment and union leaders warn of fewer jobs.
- Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Stellantis is discussing options with partner Leapmotor to build electric vehicles at its idled plant in Brampton, Ontario, reviving the facility after canceled Jeep Compass production plans.

- Flavio Volpe, president of Canada's Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association, warned that any production "must be full vehicle assembly with local suppliers," opposing Chinese "knockdown kits" that provide fewer local jobs.
- Stellantis Canada spokeswoman LouAnn Gosselin said the company is "actively evaluating future programs for Brampton," while Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly has previously stated she wants Chinese-Canadian joint ventures using local parts.
- U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra suggested in a recent interview that Chinese-made vehicles imported to Canada "are not going to cross the border into the U.S.," citing regulatory restrictions on connected vehicles using Chinese technology.
