Brown bears in Slovakia: Army to help track down

There are about 1,200 free-living brown bears living in Slovakia. The government is now talking about an emergency situation. Hundreds of animals have already been released for firing. Soldiers are now supposed to help find and observe the animals.

The Slovak Ministry of the Environment announced on Tuesday the first case of a bear being killed with the assistance of the army. The bear was killed in the Pribylina open-air museum in Liptov.

Slovakia has a problem with brown bears. That's why the government is launching larger guns against the animals: Up to 50 professional soldiers are to help bear management in the future.

50 soldiers are to support the detection and observation of the animals in the wild. 350 brown bears were released for shooting after fatal incidents for humans.
