Millions of workers to benefit from 'stronger' parental leave rights from April
The Employment Rights Act extends unpaid parental leave from day one, strengthens sick pay, and bans zero-hours contracts, benefiting an estimated 1.5 million parents, the UK Government said.
- On Monday, the UK Government laid Statutory Instruments in Parliament to implement parental leave measures under the Employment Rights Act 2025, effective from April.
- The Government says the Parental Leave and Pay review followed a parliamentary committee last year calling the system 'one of the worst in the developed world' and aims to support working families balancing work, health and cost of living.
- Business groups warn the Government's calculations estimate the Act will cost British businesses £1bn a year, while new surveys show employers hold back hiring amid uncertainty and higher costs.
- From April, Bereaved Partner's Paternity Leave grants up to 52 weeks, Statutory Instruments for SSP changes will follow in coming months, and unfair dismissal day-one rights shift to after six months.
