Starmer faces rebellion of 130 Labour MPs over benefits cuts
- More than 100 Labour MPs have rebelled against Government plans to cut disability benefits and tighten Personal Independence Payment eligibility this year in the UK.
- The rebellion arose after the Government proposed halving universal credit incapacity payments for new claimants and freezing payments for existing ones to reduce welfare spending.
- The MPs signed a private letter expressing concerns about the cuts' impacts and urged ministers to delay a Commons vote planned for June until full assessments are published.
- The Resolution Foundation projects that as many as one million to 1.2 million individuals could lose financial support, with annual reductions ranging from £4,200 to £6,300 by the year 2029-30.
- The Government insists it will proceed with the reforms, aiming to save billions while investing up to £1 billion annually by 2028-29 to help the long-term sick return to work.
