Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Stars Reflect on "Uncomfortable" Table Read for "Risky" Puppet Episode
A transporter accident turns the Enterprise crew into felt puppets, and the episode hints the chaos may be taking place in Spock's head.
- In episode five of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds titled Level-Five Transporter Accident, a transporter malfunction transforms the entire Enterprise crew into living puppets created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Spock and the puppet crew must battle Orion pirates attempting to steal the ship.
- Scotty's attempt to extend the transporter's range using Little Ricky, an old puppet from his Starfleet Academy days, triggered the malfunction. He had planned to transport it to prank a former Academy rival, inadvertently turning the entire crew into sentient puppets.
- The crew struggles with oversized chairs and touchscreen controls that don't work with felt hands. Pike actor Anson Mount told SFX magazine, "We had to do the voice work twice because the first time it was just completely wrong."
- To defend the Enterprise while keeping their situation secret, Pike, Una, and Laan disguised themselves as one full-sized Vulcan via a three-person piggyback to neutralize a guard. Admiral April had ordered Pike not to reveal the puppet transformation to anyone.
- The entire puppet sequence was revealed to be Spock's dream after he was knocked unconscious during the transporter accident. Jason Weber, creative supervisor at Jim Henson's Creature Shop, said the episode delivered results "every bit as sensational, inspirational, celebrational, and downright Muppetational as anyone could possibly have hoped for.
