Rodeo Turns Chaotic as Horses Stampede, Crowd Throws Beer Cans at First Responders, Police Say
At least six people were taken for treatment, and police made eight arrests after crowd members threw beer cans at responders.
On Saturday, stampeding horses spooked by fireworks trampled several people at a rodeo event on South Main Street in Lexington County, prompting emergency responders to arrive around 8:30 p.m.
About 1,400 people attended the event that night, requiring Gaston Police, Lexington County Emergency Services, and the Lexington County Fire Service to coordinate with the Lexington County Sheriff and South Carolina Highway Patrol.
At least six people were taken from the scene for treatment as emergency crews began attending to patients following the stampede.
As emergency crews began attending to patients, Watkins said a large crowd "became agitated" and started throwing beer cans, complicating rescue efforts.
Police made eight arrests for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest during the shutdown, with officers from Cayce, Springdale, and Pine Ridge assisting as individuals threw objects at law enforcement.
