Spotify to raise monthly subscription price to $12.99 in US and other markets
Spotify’s US Premium subscription prices rise by $1 to $2 across plans to fund expanded content and support artists, marking the third hike in three years.
- On January 15, Spotify announced Premium price increases for subscribers in the United States, Estonia and Latvia effective with their February billing date, while new customers face immediate charges.
- Company leaders said the price changes support adding audiobooks, videos and podcast features while Daniel Ek became executive chairman and Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström serve as co‑CEOs.
- Family plans will increase from $19.99 to $21.99 per month, and Duo Premium will rise from $16.99 to $18.99, according to Spotify.
- Analysts, including JPMorgan, predicted the U.S. hike could increase Spotify's revenue by $500 million, and Spotify shares jumped 3% in premarket trading on Thursday, while commentators note it now leads price comparators Apple Music, YouTube Music and Amazon Music Unlimited.
- This marks Spotify's third U.S. price increase in three years, affecting a platform with more than 281 million paid users, 25% of whom are in North America.
