Spotify’s New Running Mode Knows Exactly when Your Playlist Should Speed Up
The feature builds playlists around warmup, intervals, recovery and cooldown, with audio cues and 25 presets for runners.
- On Thursday, Spotify launched Running Mode, a new AI-powered feature within its Fitness Hub for Premium subscribers on Apple devices. Users can customize running presets, select music genres, and target specific BPM for structured workouts.
- Building on Prompted Playlists technology introduced last year, Spotify expanded into fitness content in April. The company previously operated Spotify Running from 2015 to 2018, which automatically detected pace via device sensors rather than requiring users to preset workout parameters.
- Users select from 25 curated presets or build custom sessions by choosing duration and BPM. Optional English-language audio prompts deliver 'timely cues and motivation without getting in the way of your music,' functioning as virtual coaching during steady, interval, or pyramid training.
- Running Mode is available today to Premium subscribers in Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden via iOS. Spotify has not announced Android availability or a broader international rollout, limiting initial access to these regions.
- Designed as a training aid rather than a fitness tracker, Running Mode lacks GPS route recording or distance tracking. Instead, it helps runners 'perfect your inner metronome' by locking music tempo to target cadence for pacing practice.
