Rescue Teams Search for American Hiker Missing in Pyrenees
ORDESA Y MONTE PERDIDO NATIONAL PARK, SPAIN, JUL 16 – Specialist rescue teams and helicopters continue searching for Cole Henderson, 27, who went missing after starting a snow-covered hike on a challenging Pyrenees route, officials said.
- Spanish specialist mountain rescue teams and Air Service helicopters have been searching in northern Spain's Ordesa y Monte Perdido park for 27-year-old American hiker Cole Henderson since July 9.
- Henderson sent a text saying he had parked his car in Torla, enabled airplane mode, and started his hike, but he missed his flight home on July 12 and was reported missing on July 14.
- Authorities located Henderson’s vehicle in Torla, a town west of the national park, where the usual route to Monte Perdido remains snowbound during the beginning of July and is considered moderately challenging.
- Monte Perdido, the Pyrenees' third-highest peak at 11,007 feet, is rated 'Peu Difficile' or 'somewhat difficult', requiring specialized equipment like ice axes and crampons according to the climbing community.
