Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar calls Trump, Netanyahu and Putin 'monsters' in Cannes
The Spanish filmmaker said artists have a moral duty to speak out as he denounced Trump, Netanyahu and Putin and wore a Free Palestine pin.
On Wednesday, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar urged Europeans to act as a "shield" against Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Vladimir Putin during a press conference at the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
Prompted by concerns over censorship and Canal+ CEO Maxine Saada's threat to blacklist artists, Almodóvar argued that silence is "a symptom that things are going really badly."
Tensions escalated after 600 industry members, including Juliette Binoche and Swann Arlaud, signed a letter criticizing billionaire Vincent Bolloré for controlling the French media pipeline.
Saada announced the network would blacklist signatories, declaring "I don't want to work with people who call us crypto-fascists." Almodóvar countered that artists have a moral obligation to speak out.
Wearing a "Free Palestine" pin, Almodóvar highlighted his past activism, including a letter signed last year denouncing genocide in Gaza alongside Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon.
