SpaceX limits Starlink operations in Ukraine, disrupting military missions, presidential aide says
Ukrainian officials said the cap hit military Starshield terminals and disrupted drone missions, with some connections dropping at 110-120 km/h.
On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, SpaceX imposed a 160 km/h speed cap on Starshield, its military-grade satellite service, disrupting Ukrainian combat drone missions without prior notice to the country's defense forces.
The restrictions emerged amid Trump administration pressure on Kyiv to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries, with officials linking the timing to political tensions and potential intelligence-sharing suspensions that have already begun.
Ukrainian defense adviser Serhii Beskrestnov stated, "Our defence forces did not receive a warning about this limitation, and this led to the disruption of several missions." Connection drops occur at 110–120 km/h.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski publicly challenged Elon Musk on X, asking, "Are you playing politics with your products again?" as Kyiv reported missing intelligence warnings before recent Russian missile attacks.
These disruptions complicate Ukraine's aerial defenses against jet-powered Shahed drones, illustrating the country's strategic dependence on private satellite infrastructure and vulnerability to single-provider control during wartime.
Elon Musk's company Space X appears to have restricted Starlink for the Ukrainian military. Objects that fly too fast are said to lose their connection. - In that case, you destroy large parts of Ukraine's capabilities, says Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi.
