SpaceX launch could create ‘space jellyfish’ over Central Florida skies
The Falcon 9 will carry multiple satellites and attempt a booster landing on a droneship after liftoff, SpaceX said.
SpaceX is targeting Tuesday, Oct. 20, for the launch of the Bandwagon-5 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station after scrubbing Monday's attempt due to unfavorable recovery weather conditions.
Marking the 19th flight for the first-stage booster, the Falcon 9 carries multiple satellites and re-entry vehicles for a rideshare mission, aiming to land on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean.
Observers along the coast may witness a "space jellyfish" effect, where sunlight illuminates the rocket's expanding exhaust plume about five to 15 minutes after the 6:30 a.m. liftoff.
Weather conditions at the launch site improved to an 85% chance of success, with the rocket's southeastern trajectory potentially providing a prominent visual display for residents in the Caribbean and southern Florida.
A backup launch opportunity remains available Wednesday if the mission does not proceed, while SpaceX continues to coordinate with the Space Launch Delta 45 weather squadron to monitor recovery conditions.
