Southport killer charged with prison attacks and possessing weapon
Police say Rudakubana faces four charges, including assault and weapon possession, over alleged attacks on staff during six months in custody.
- The Metropolitan Police charged Axel Rudakubana on Tuesday with three assaults on staff at HMP Belmarsh and unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon during 2025.
- Rudakubana is serving a 52-year sentence for the 2024 Southport attack that killed Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, and injured eight other children and two adults.
- Last week, the MoJ confirmed Rudakubana's transfer to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Crowthorne. Offenders unable to be managed safely in prison due to mental disorders are moved to such units.
- Rudakubana is due to appear via videolink at Westminster Magistrates on September 11. The MoJ stated the transfer does not alter his life sentence imposed for previous crimes.
- Under the Mental Health Act, officials must accept clinical advice regarding patient management. Should Rudakubana no longer require psychiatric treatment, the law permits a swift return to prison.
