Southern Water Fined £7m over Sewage Pollution in Kent
Southern Water admitted 13 offences after untreated sewage releases shut beaches and drew protests, with the Environment Agency prosecuting the case.
On Friday, Mr Justice Johnson sentenced Southern Water at Canterbury Crown Court to pay £7,127,083 for illegally dumping sewage off the Kent coast between 2019 and 2021.
The utility firm pleaded guilty to 13 offenses involving untreated sewage discharges at Margate and Broadstairs wastewater stations, and failed to notify the Environment Agency within 24 hours of telemetry warnings.
Mr Justice Johnson cited "overall serious failures," while beach closures resulting from the discharges led Thanet District Council to describe the incidents as "hugely damaging" to local tourism.
Defending Southern Water, barrister Dominic Kay KC claimed the company has been rebuilt around accountability since 2022, yet it faces fresh scrutiny from Portsmouth City Council's separate water quality review.
Environmental concerns persist as storm overflows remain a primary pollution source, with Surfers Against Sewage calling for the Clean Water Bill to address systemic ownership and infrastructure issues.
