Southampton plays part in NASA mission returning asteroid sample to Earth

NASA OSIRIS-REx’ probe released a capsule containing soil samples from the asteroid Bennu at the Utah Test and Training Range of the US Department of Defense. Scientists from aerospace company Leonardo in Southampton created infrared sensors for Arizona State University’s (ASU) Thermal Emission Spectrometer. The sensors have allowed the OTES to identify the minerals present on the asteroid.
