South Yorkshire's Oliver Coppard to Host Olympics and Paralympics Bid
Athletes say a multi-city Games could spread regeneration benefits and inspire communities, as UK Sport begins an initial feasibility assessment.
On Tuesday, mayors from across the North and elite athletes gathered at Steel City Stadium in Sheffield to advance the Northern Olympic and Paralympic bid for the 2040s.
More than 40 Olympians and Paralympians, including Sir Jason Kenny and Dame Laura Kenny, signed a joint statement backing the bid, describing it as a "moment of renewal and confidence for the entire United Kingdom."
The Government recently commissioned an "initial strategic assessment" to explore the bid's feasibility, while leaders emphasize a distributed multi-city model similar to the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.
Northern leaders view the bid as a solution to regional growth, though London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan claimed excluding the capital would be a "missed opportunity."
The proposal remains in its infancy, with any final decision by the British Olympic Association likely years away, though organizers aim to build on London 2012's legacy using world-class venues across the North.
