Aid Agencies in South Sudan Decry Restricted Access as Government and Opposition Troops Fight
Government suspension of humanitarian flights since December 2025 has left nearly 400,000 people in Jonglei without medical care, worsening a crisis amid ongoing conflict and displacement.
- On Monday, the South Sudan government suspended all humanitarian flights to Jonglei, cutting off medical supplies, staff movement and emergency evacuations.
- Renewed clashes since December have displaced more than 230,000 people, straining the 2018 peace deal as forces loyal to opposition leader Riek Machar and allied 'White Army' fighters recently gained ground.
- MSF data show it is the sole health provider for about 250,000 people in Lankien and Pieri and 112,000 in Akobo, with at least 23 critically ill patients urgently requiring evacuation after MSF left Pieri.
- Evacuating staff, MSF reduced its services to emergency and lifesaving care only after evacuating staff from Lankien and Akobo.
