South Sudan Flooding Displaces 335,000 as Nearly 1M Affected
- Friday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said more than 960,000 people have been affected and around 335,000 displaced across six states in South Sudan.
- The flooding has compounded an already critical humanitarian situation in South Sudan, driven by conflict and acute food insecurity affecting 7.7 million people, with more than 104,000 malaria cases reported by WHO.
- Earlier this week, the International Organization for Migration signed an $8.5 million agreement to bolster Bor Town flood defenses and rehabilitate 95 km of drainage channels, while the World Health Organization and World Food Programme delivered over 50 metric tonnes of medical supplies and food aid.
- Since September, 143 health facilities have been affected by floods, including 44 fully submerged or damaged, disrupting access to essential services in Jonglei and Unity States.
- The National Child Labour Study found 64 per cent of children aged five to 17 forced into labour, and Chris Nyamandi, Save the Children's South Sudan country director, said `Education remains the strongest protective factor`.
