South Korean Submarine Dosan Ahn Chang-Ho Completes Historic 14,000-Km Pacific Crossing
The 3,000-ton submarine is making a 14,000-kilometre voyage to show endurance as Hanwha and Germany’s TKMS compete for up to 12 boats.
- On Saturday, the 3,000-ton South Korean submarine ROKS Dosan Ahn Chang-ho arrived at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in Victoria, British Columbia, to conduct joint anti-submarine exercises with the Royal Canadian Navy and showcase Hanwha Ocean's bid for Canada's multibillion-dollar submarine contract.
- Canada is evaluating bids from Hanwha Ocean and Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems to supply up to 12 new submarines, a program estimated at roughly $44 billion intended to replace the aging Victoria-class fleet.
- Demonstrating long-endurance capabilities, the Dosan Ahn Chang-ho completed a 14,000-kilometer trans-Pacific voyage, fulfilling a core requirement of the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project to operate in the Arctic with extended range and stealth.
- Rear-Admiral David Patchell, Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, stated "I need them yesterday" regarding new submarines, while emphasizing the Canadian Armed Forces must expand its submariner workforce from roughly 200 to 1,000 to operate the future fleet.
- Hanwha has pledged up to $345 million to fund a new structural steel beam mill at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and promised to build armoured vehicles in Canada if selected, aiming to influence the procurement decision expected this summer.
