South Korea Prosecutors Seek 10-Year Jail Term for Ex-President Yoon
- On Dec. 26, special counsel in Seoul sought a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Suk Yeol over offences tied to his Dec. 3, 2024 martial law attempt.
- Following its investigation, prosecutors allege former President Yoon blocked investigators from detaining him in January and excluded nine Cabinet members from a martial law review meeting.
- At the final hearing, Cho Eun-suk's special counsel team presented a sentencing request at Seoul Central District Court demanding five years for blocking detention, three years for violating Cabinet members' rights, and two years for drafting the revised proclamation.
- The court signaled a likely Jan. 16 verdict for the obstruction trial, which will be the first to finish, while Yoon faces multiple related trials including a related insurrection trial.
- Historically, the move followed Yoon's Dec. 3, 2024 suspension of civilian rule, which caused massive protests and a parliamentary showdown; a team member said the acts `seriously damaged law and order` and urged strict accountability to prevent repeat power abuses.
