Regarding the introduction of abortion drugs, which is being pursued approximately seven years after the Constitutional Court's 2019 ruling of unconstitutionality, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Won Min-kyeong stated on the 22nd, "It is fortunate that it is happening now," but added, "During the seven years or so, the infringement of women's safety and health rights..."
The introduction of mifepristone (or RU 486) could help reduce the blurry surrounding the issue of abortion rights in South Korea. The government wants to allow this medicine early next year, but the proposed modalities, including limiting its delivery to hospitals and within a maximum of nine weeks of pregnancy, are debated.
