South Korea asks North Korea for help with finding missing seaman near border
Seoul deployed about 10 ships and aircraft and asked Pyongyang to help search for a sailor believed to have drifted north of the border.
On Sunday, South Korea asked North Korea to help search for and return a missing navy sailor believed to have drifted north of the Northern Limit Line during a patrol off its eastern coast.
The seaman apprentice went missing Sunday morning while aboard a naval vessel patrolling about 50 kilometers off Geojin in Gangwon Province, last seen by a crew member between midnight and 2 a.m.
South Korea's Navy launched a search operation with the Coast Guard, deploying around 10 ships and aircraft. Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back instructed officials to "make every effort to rescue the missing serviceman as quickly and safely as possible."
Pyongyang has not responded to the humanitarian request, despite Seoul notifying North Korea through international merchant ship communication channels while the country deepens ties with Moscow.
President Lee Jae Myung's appeal aligns with his dovish approach toward the North, seeking to ease tensions through dialogue and confidence-building measures that mark a sharp shift from his predecessor's hawkish policies.
The request was sent via text message to journalists because there is no active communication line between the divided countries, according to the ministry responsible for inter-Korean affairs.
