South Africa's police chief suspended over health contract award
Puleng Dimpane will serve as acting commissioner as prosecutors pursue charges over a 360-million-rand police health tender, officials said.
- On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola over allegations he violated public finance rules in the irregular awarding of a 228-million-rand tender.
- Masemola faces four counts of violating the Public Finance Management Act, with prosecutors alleging he failed to comply with required financial oversight controls during the 360 million-rand Medicare24 deal.
- Appearing in court Tuesday, Masemola faced charges alongside businessman Vusimuzi Matlala and 12 other senior police officers accused of corruption, fraud, and money laundering related to the contract.
- Ramaphosa appointed Puleng Dimpane as acting commissioner, stating these measures are necessary to "ensure accountability and to devise remedial action to prevent the abuse of office and the theft of public resources."
- The contract remains a focal point of the Madlanga Commission, which investigates criminal syndicates within law enforcement, following the leave of absence of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu last year.
