South Africa coach Broos urges squad to savour achievements at 2026 World Cup
On Sunday, South Africa exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a last-gasp 1-0 loss to Canada in the Round of 32, marking the team's first-ever knockout stage appearance.
Head coach Hugo Broos, 74, had previously committed to retiring after this tournament, having guided the team to three consecutive major tournaments including the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Broos is now reconsidering his exit, stating, "Maybe, maybe, we can find something in South Africa where I can contribute," suggesting a potential non-coaching role beyond the World Cup.
Despite the exit, Broos told FIFA, "I'm still proud of my team even though we're out of the tournament," praising the squad's mentality and performance throughout the competition.
Qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations begin in September, with the tournament hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania next year, forcing the South African Football Association to make urgent coaching decisions.
