'Sorry': Former NZ top cop says he made 'wrong call' to use

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush acknowledged the error in using a police helicopter due to strong winds making fixed-wing flights unviable, with no extra cost to taxpayers, he said.

  • On Monday, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush flew from Melbourne to Hobart using the Victoria Police Air Wing to attend the Australian and New Zealand Police Commissioners Forum.
  • Because strong winds made the fixed-wing plane unviable, Victoria Police used its secondary Air Wing, which mainly trains and backs up, for the Hobart trip on Monday.
  • The helicopter stayed in Hobart overnight, and police said the flight fell within leased monthly flying hours for October, creating no additional financial cost; hire costs are $10,217.70 for the first hour and $5,109.70 per half hour.
  • On Wednesday, Mike Bush apologised, saying `I'm sorry that I made a bad decision` and `I'm holding myself personally accountable`, adding `I will not be making the same mistake again` since June.
  • Accompanying him, New Zealand Police Commissioner Richard Chambers joined the flight, Victorian minister Lily D'Ambrosio called it an error of judgement, and Mr Bush will return on a commercial one-hour flight to Melbourne.
