Sony Launches True RGB TVs in the Bravia Series, and It’s the Start of a Whole New Era
After more than a year of teasing, Sony announced its first True RGB TVs: the Bravia 9 II flagship and more affordable Bravia 7 II, both employing independently controlled red, green, and blue LED backlights for purer color and greater brightness.
Sony's development follows over 20 years of LED advancement, from its first independent RGB light sources in the Qualia 005 launched in 2004 through its flagship Backlight Master Drive in 2016, driven by 4,000-nit mastering standards now common in professional filmmaking.
The Bravia 9 II measured 4,122 nits peak brightness and around 89% of the BT.2020 color space, while the Bravia 7 II delivered 2,078 nits in Professional Mode; pricing starts at $3,600 for the 65-inch Bravia 9 II and $1,600 for the 50-inch Bravia 7 II.
Early testing showed the Bravia 9 II delivered richer, deeper pictures than the original Bravia 9 Mini LED, coming remarkably close to professional broadcast monitors used by Hollywood filmmakers, while its Immersive Black Screen Pro technology essentially eliminated reflections in controlled demonstrations.
The Bravia 9 II emerges as the first LED display offering genuine competition to premium OLED TVs, with performance described as surpassing rival RGB displays from Samsung, LG, Hisense, and TCL, while the 50-inch Bravia 7 II addresses a gap in high-end TVs at smaller sizes.
