'Somebody could have been killed’: Video shows kids leading Newburgh Heights police on stolen car chase before crash

Three children, ages 8, 11, and 12, led police on a chase in a stolen vehicle before crashing into a home; the 11-year-old driver faces juvenile felony charges, officials said.

  • Just before 3 p.m. Saturday, a Flock license-plate reader alerted Newburgh Heights Police to a white Kia stolen from Parma that three children, ages 8, 11 and 12, drove before crashing into a home in Newburgh Heights, Ohio.
  • Police say the trio admitted they learned how to steal cars from YouTube tutorials and used a USB cord to hot-wire the vehicle, Majoy said, `So they told the officers that they watched a YouTube video. And so just out of morbid curiosity... I went on to YouTube myself... and I researched how to steal a car, and was surprised that there's literally dozens of... videos.`
  • Video released by the department shows when police tried to stop the car around 2:55 p.m., the 11‑year‑old fled westbound on Harvard Avenue and over the Denison Bridge, then all three exited and fled on foot, with officers quickly detaining them, shown in body camera video.
  • All three children were released to their parents and are expected to appear in juvenile court within 30 days, with no injuries reported and minor home damage, authorities said.
  • Majoy said, `'This has got to be a record for the youngest driver in a pursuit that I've ever seen,'` and noted `'11-years-old for God's sake, that's incredible,'` while homeowner Daniel Reilly said it could have been much worse.
