Somaliland president makes 'historic' visit to Israel
On Sunday, Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi arrived in Israel for his first state visit, marking a milestone in diplomatic relations formally established in December 2025.
Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland's independence in December 2025, validating the breakaway state's 35-year struggle for sovereignty since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991.
During a state luncheon with 50 guests, President Isaac Herzog and Abdullahi discussed regional stability and maritime freedom, with Herzog calling the visit a "wonderful new partnership."
Somaliland will officially open its embassy in Jerusalem's Malha Technology Park on Monday evening, becoming the eighth nation to establish a diplomatic mission in the city.
Abdullahi will address the Knesset on Tuesday and meet with business leaders through Thursday to discuss water management and renewable energy technologies, deepening bilateral economic cooperation.
On 26 December 2025, Israel was the first country to recognize Somaliland as an "independent and sovereign state" since its secession from Somalia in 1991.
