Social Security watchdog opens investigation into telephone wait times and customer service
The Social Security Administration's inspector general began auditing telephone wait time metrics following concerns about discrepancies and lengthy waits reported by Senator Warren.
- On Aug. 21, the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General initiated an audit into the agency's wait-time metrics, Acting Inspector General Michelle Anderson said the investigation opened last month.
- After meetings between our staffs, Michelle Anderson signed off on an audit last month following discussions with Frank Bisignano about concerns raised by Sen. Elizabeth Warren .
- The audit will examine the accuracy of the Social Security Administration's service metrics and performance changes during Fiscal Year 2025, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren's June probe found wait times averaged nearly an hour and 45 minutes, conflicting with the SSA's reported eight-minute wait.
- Anderson wrote the OIG expects to obtain necessary information quickly and complete the audit before the end of the calendar year; Bisignano said last month the SSA is undergoing `a customer service turnaround after four years of long wait times and record backlogs`.
- The agency says it has made improvements in wait times and efficiency, while Warren's office released the Aug. 21 letter on Wednesday to spotlight oversight of Social Security Administration customer service.
