Atlanta Influencer 'Shawty Dred' Indicted in $4M SNAP Fraud Scheme
Prosecutors say he controlled more than 350 fake accounts and used stolen identities to steal benefits meant for low-income families.
On October 13, 2026, federal authorities arrested Atlanta social media personality Mercedes Reshard New, known online as 'Shawty Dred,' on 63 counts including mail fraud and SNAP fraud for an alleged $4 million scheme.
Prosecutors allege New duped the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services into transferring approximately $4.6 million into fraudulent accounts created using stolen identities between January 2020 and July 2026.
New regularly flaunted his proceeds on Instagram account 'richlifeshawtydred,' which has more than 2 million followers, posting images of private jets, Rolls-Royce and Maybach vehicles. Posts disparaged others as 'broke motherf****s.'
The case formed part of the Justice Department's National USDA Benefits and Programme Fraud Enforcement Surge from September 1 to October 21, targeting more than 40 individuals in cases involving nearly $45 million in intended losses.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg stated his office is 'fully committed to rooting out abuses' of SNAP, while FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham vowed to 'aggressively pursue anyone' exploiting these programs.
