SocDems' Ennis Tops Tally as It 'Could Be Difficult for Sinn Fein to Catch Up'
The former League of Ireland player and community worker could give the Social Democrats a breakthrough after building support on local issues.
Social Democrats candidate Daniel Ennis won the Dublin Central by-election, topping the poll to fill the seat vacated by former minister Paschal Donohoe.
Constituents voted on Friday to fill vacancies left by Donohoe, who joined the World Bank, and Catherine Connolly, who became president.
Ennis finished 2% ahead of Sinn Fein's Janice Boylan, who received 20%, while Green Party Cllr Janet Horner, Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch, and Ray McAdam received 11%.
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald acknowledged it was "not our day," noting political growth sometimes takes "detours" after the party failed to capture the seat.
The new TD for Dublin Central plans to prioritize eradicating dereliction, increasing home building, and boosting Garda presence to address community needs.
