BYD in Talks with Automakers over European Factory Takeovers · TechNode

BYD is seeking spare factory capacity in Europe as weak domestic demand pushes the EV maker to expand overseas, Stella Li said.

  • On Wednesday, Shenzhen-based BYD confirmed talks with Stellantis and other carmakers about taking over underused European facilities, Bloomberg News reported.
  • Weak domestic demand prompted BYD to seek larger overseas markets, while Stellantis shocked investors with a €22-billion write-down on EV operations.
  • The Cassino plant in Frosinone produced just 2,916 cars in the first quarter of 2026, a fall of 37.4%, while the historic Mirafiori plant in Turin produces only Fiat 500 models.
  • "We are looking for any available plant in Europe," BYD Vice President Stella Li said, adding the company wants to "utilise this kind of spare capacity" and finds Stellantis' Maserati "very interesting."
  • BYD is building a separate factory in Szeged, Hungary, scheduled to open in 2027, as Chinese EV makers increasingly seek production assets in The European market.
