Snowboarding monk in spotlight after S. Korea's Olympic glory
- This month, alumni of the Dharma Snowboard Competition won three Olympic snowboard medals in Italy, including South Korea's first-ever gold, all medallists are Dharma Kids.
- More than 20 years ago, Venerable Hosan, head monk of Bongsunsa Temple, launched the youth snowboard event after learning many young athletes struggled with training costs and gained Buddhist colleagues' support.
- At Bongsunsa Temple, medallists Kim Sang-kyum and Yu Seung-eun link training with mentorship through meditation and 108 prostrations, as Lee said, `There is a Buddhist saying that the lotus blooms from the mud.`
- The monk declined AFP's interview requests, citing duties and a prayer schedule, while Lee Kyung-min, deputy manager of Bongsunsa Temple, said `He's been praying for the athletes` and described Venerable Hosan as 'obviously over the moon'.
- The competition now serves as a key platform, with Bongsunsa Temple saying, `For the Buddhist community, it is deeply moving for us to see people we witnessed as kids become national team members and even win Olympic medals`.
