Blast of winter weather hits Midwest and East Coast and could bring snow to Florida
Snow squalls caused whiteout conditions, grounded flights, and a 30-vehicle crash, with temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below normal across the Midwest and East Coast, the NWS said.
- Saturday, a blast of winter weather brought snowfall and subfreezing wind chills across the Midwest and East Coast and near-freezing temperatures into parts of the South, the National Weather Service said.
- An arctic cold front is pushing east with snow squalls forming, while the Weather Prediction Center forecasted very cold nights for much of the Central and Eastern U.S. into early next week.
- National Weather Service warnings describe snow squalls causing near-zero visibility and rapid road accumulation, while the NWS Chicago office reported winds gusting 40 to nearly 60 mph as FAA grounded flights and Indiana State Police reported a 30-vehicle crash.
- The National Weather Service warned travel could be dangerous with possible interstate closures, while the Waterloo Warming Center will stay open nightly through March 31 to protect residents.
- In Tallahassee, Kristian Oliver said some snowfall is possible Sunday morning, but accumulation is very unlikely because the ground will be too warm; this would follow January 2025’s 10-inch snow in the Florida Panhandle.
