Small quake shakes Hayfork on Great ShakeOut Day

A small earthquake rattled parts of Trinity County late Thursday morning, Oct. 16, coinciding with California’s annual Great ShakeOut preparedness drill — though Trinity County itself did not take part in the statewide exercise. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck at 10:58 a.m. on Thursday, about 14.3 miles (23 kilometers) north-northwest of Hayfork at a depth of roughly 18 miles (29 kilometers).
