Skilled Migrants Could Contribute £115bn to Public Finances, Think Tank Says
The think tank said the contribution would offset government estimates of a £10bn cost for settling overseas care workers and dependants.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce her final decision on immigration rules today in the House of Commons, following a year-long consultation that generated more than 200,000 responses.
Ahead of the announcement, the Institute for Public Policy Research reported skilled migrants are expected to contribute around £115 billion to public finances, countering government estimates of £10 billion in costs for care workers.
IPPR associate director for migration Marley Morris welcomed reports that the government may scale back proposals to extend settlement waits to 15 years, describing the potential shift as a 'significant compromise' for roughly 287,000 care workers.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has supported Mahmood's principle that settlement is a 'right to be earned,' though Housing Secretary Angela Rayner criticized plans to backdate the restrictive changes earlier this year.
Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp characterized the expected announcement as a 'U-turn' on Indefinite Leave to Remain , while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage claimed Mahmood is losing a fight to the 'far left' of her party.
