Skiing body FIS signs Azerbaijan to five-year sponsor deal for world championships
- On May 6, 2025, the global governing organization for skiing and snowboarding unveiled a five-year sponsorship agreement with Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency, covering world championships and selected World Cup competitions.
- FIS made the deal amid concerns about climate change endangering winter sports, while Azerbaijan, an oil- and gas-rich country led by President Ilham Aliyev, aims to boost its winter sports profile.
- The partnership grants Azerbaijan naming rights in multiple FIS World Cup events such as freestyle skiing and snowboard competitions, while the country also boasts several ski resorts, including Shahdag, which is situated at an altitude exceeding 2,300 meters.
- FIS President Johan Eliasch said the partnership "ticks all the boxes," bringing value across disciplines and expanding snow sports from recreational to elite levels into a new growth market.
- The agreement positions Azerbaijan as snow sports' global destination partner through 2030 and could advance the country's winter tourism amid broader challenges facing ski sports worldwide.
