Singapore to Invest over $779 Million in Public AI Research Through 2030

Singapore will fund AI research centres, talent programmes, and applied AI projects with over S$1 billion from 2025 to 2030 to enhance global competitiveness, officials said.

  • The government pledged over S$1 billion to public AI research through 2030, announced by Minister Josephine Teo at a gala during Singapore AI Research Week.
  • To boost capabilities, the Ministry of Digital Development and Information said it will prioritise responsible and resource-efficient AI and develop talent from pre-university students to university faculty, focusing funding on fundamental AI, applied AI and talent development.
  • The plan will create research centres of excellence hosted in public institutions, with fewer RCEs backed by larger investments complementing more than 60 AI Centres of Excellence and the Sea-Lion open-source model funded with S$70 million.
  • The funding will support the AI Visiting Professorship to deepen international collaboration, benefiting Mr Gregory Lau, PhD student, School of Computing, National University of Singapore, and accelerating AI adoption in manufacturing, health, urban solutions and sustainability.
  • Following earlier RIE investments and a 2024 S$500 million compute allocation, this second tranche aims to strengthen Singapore’s ambition to be an AI research hub, Mrs Teo said.
