We’re whizzing along on a train southwest of Taipei when my husband taps my shoulder and points toward the digital stop sign. “No…,” I whisper, both in disbelief and amusement. “Oh yeah,” he replies with a big smile, and we both point our phones at the train door in anticipation. It only takes a few seconds for that artificial voice to sound, first in Chinese and then in English: “We’re arriving in Shulin.”
