2 Tamil Nadu Officials Suspended over Hindi Signposts on State Highway Amid Uproar
The state said the signboard violated its two-language policy, and departmental action was also started against the officials.
On Friday, the state government suspended an Assistant Divisional Engineer and an Assistant Engineer from the State Highways Department for including Hindi on a signboard in the Sathankulam area of Thoothukudi.
Tamil Nadu's two-language policy mandates the use of only Tamil and English on state signage, and the appearance of Hindi on the board contradicted this established rule, sparking public criticism.
According to the official statement, "Two officials suspended for use of Hindi words in signboard on State Highway." Authorities warned of strict disciplinary action against staff violating the policy.
DMK president Stalin questioned the administration's consistency, asking, "Now, the State government itself is imposing Hindi." He challenged the TVK-led government on whether this represented promised change.
Stalin further labeled the administration a "Reels government," alleging it prioritizes North Indian social media influencers, despite School Education Minister Rajmohan Arumugam's earlier pledges of commitment to language policy.
