As US nears 250th birthday, Reuters/Ipsos poll shows many Americans doubt it will last another 250 years
A Reuters/Ipsos poll found 77% expect more political violence and 38% doubt the United States will still exist as a single country in 250 years.
A new Reuters and Ipsos poll reveals profound national divisions, with 38% of Americans expressing skepticism that the United States will exist as a single country 250 years from now.
President Donald Trump continues to inject polarizing pageantry into upcoming Independence Day celebrations, including a Washington event serving as a political rally as his party aims to retain control of Congress.
Even traditional Independence Day celebrations reveal partisan divides: 52% of Republicans plan to wear red, white, and blue clothing compared with 20% of Democrats, and Republicans are more likely to attend fireworks displays.
The poll also found that two-thirds of Americans, encompassing 85% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans, agree that American democracy is in danger of failing, while 77% believe political violence is likely to increase.
Reflecting these deep-seated concerns, only 30% of respondents now consider America the greatest country in the world, a decline from 38% in previous polling, as the nation grapples with its highly polarized political landscape.
