Shiromani Akali Dal calls for ‘immediate’ implementation of women’s quota, backs delimitation
Sukhbir Singh Badal said the party wants the women’s quota and delimitation implemented now, and backed a plan to raise Lok Sabha seats to 850.
- On Saturday, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal demanded the "immediate implementation" of the Women's Reservation Bill at a party meeting in Chandigarh, also calling for a fair delimitation exercise.
- Drawing from Sikh Gurus' teachings on gender equality, Badal noted the SAD draws its values from the Sikh faith. The Central government is attempting to pass legislation for 33 per cent women's reservation and increase Lok Sabha seats to 816.
- The SAD supports a government proposal for a uniform 50% increase in seats to ensure no state is disadvantaged. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has already set an example by providing women's reservation in its House.
- This demand follows Badal's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday at Parliament House, which rekindled speculation about a potential alliance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.
- The Constitution aims to raise Lok Sabha seats to 850, though previous attempts failed to secure the required two-thirds majority. The National Democratic Alliance is firming up strategies during the ongoing Monsoon session.
