New Jersey's Sherrill Signs 'Shield' Law on Abortions, 'Gender Affirming' Care
The law bars state cooperation with out-of-state cases and creates criminal penalties of up to 18 months in prison and $10,000 fines.
- On Thursday, Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed shield law S2260/A2218, protecting access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare that is legal in New Jersey.
- Its enactment comes as the Trump administration escalates its campaign against gender-affirming care, with the Justice Department having issued more than 20 subpoenas to clinics and doctors.
- The measure prevents New Jersey officials from arresting individuals, issuing search warrants, or assisting out-of-state investigations based solely on protected conduct; it also strengthens patient confidentiality and shields medical licenses.
- "Today marks a decisive turning point in this state," said Lauren Albrecht, senior director of advocacy at Garden State Equality, praising protections for medical autonomy.
- New Jersey joins 16 other states and Washington, D.C., in providing these protections, which apply to abortion, contraception, and gender-affirming care including telehealth services.
