She survived a school shooting. Now her children have, too
Michelle said the attack revived memories of the 2001 Granite Hills High School shooting, and she waited three hours in a church before reuniting with her sons.
Last Thursday, a former student shot through the glass doors of Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, killing a teacher and three students, triggering traumatic flashbacks for Michelle, a 40-year-old survivor of a 2001 shooting at Granite Hills High School.
Memories of Granite Hills High School 25 years ago resurfaced as Michelle recalled her principal's voice echoing "Lockdown!" through the loudspeaker during that attack. She said the recent shooting "was just honestly the worst day of my life, much worse than when I actually went through it myself as a child."
After her son called saying "Mom, there's a shooter," Michelle fled an Olive Garden where she had been eating lunch and called 911 while running. She waited three grueling hours in a church before reuniting with her two sons.
Later that evening, Michelle found her 11-year-old son reading news headlines reporting multiple deaths at his school. He immediately asked to be homeschooled, saying "I never want to go in that school again."
An emergency agent told Michelle, "Unfortunately, we've had 25 years to perfect this process," yet trauma continues to shape her daily life. She constantly scans for emergency exits in public spaces, never feeling truly safe since surviving her own school shooting.
