A 16-year-old carried out the Bend school shooting. Could his parents face charges?
Investigators are weighing whether the teen’s mother, who bought the gun legally, and his father could face charges under Oregon juvenile firearm law.
Authorities in Bend are investigating whether the parents of the 16-year-old shooter at Silver Rail Elementary School could face criminal charges after police executed a search warrant at their home last Thursday, seizing computers and electronics.
Recent school shooting convictions in Michigan and Georgia demonstrate parents can face prosecution for providing firearms to minors, with prosecutors arguing such actions represented "criminal negligence" and juries agreeing.
Police confirmed Wednesday the teen's mother legally purchased the firearm used in the shooting. Oregon law generally prohibits anyone under 18 from possessing firearms, with exceptions for specific long guns transferred by a parent.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed the parents were interviewed and cooperative as detectives served search warrants on the attacker's electronic devices and social media accounts "on a variety of platforms."
CNN senior law enforcement analyst Andrew McCabe noted this investigation mirrors previous cases, saying, "It certainly could lead to a situation like we've seen recently in the last few years in Georgia and also Michigan, where parents have been charged criminally.
