Corry Man Sentenced in Killing of Amish Woman, Unborn Child
SPARTA TOWNSHIP, CRAWFORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, JUL 28 – Shawn Cranston received two life sentences without parole for killing Rebekah Byler and her unborn child during a burglary, with jury conviction after three hours of deliberation.
- On February 26, 2024, Shawn Cranston of Corry burglarized and fatally stabbed and shot Rebekah Byler, a 23-year-old pregnant Amish woman, inside her home near Spartansburg.
- Cranston targeted Byler's home expecting it to be empty but encountered her with her two young children nearby, leading to the violent murders during the burglary attempt.
- The prosecution presented DNA from a glove, matching shoe prints, vehicle tire treads, GPS data, surveillance footage, and inmate testimony to prove Cranston's guilt at a four-day trial.
- Judge Schultz sentenced Cranston to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, condemning the brutal nature of the crime and stressing that Cranston could have simply chosen to leave instead of committing the offense.
- Attorney General Dave Sunday praised the jury and investigators, stating Cranston committed a "truly evil act" and will spend life in prison without chance to harm others again.
